In March/April of 2020 the whole world shut down from Covid-19. Philadelphia businesses closed and many boarded over their windows. The streets were silent and empty from the normal buzz of bicycles, buses, and foot traffic along the sidewalks.

Not to be depressing, but in reality–It was a bleak time filled with a looming sense of hopelessness.

For working artists, it was a time of extreme uncertainty for future work (if any at all). Mural Arts Philadelphia reached out to artists to bring light to the boarded-up walls and to the sidewalks through uplifting and colorful temporary murals, and 6ft social-distancing sidewalk markers spreading messaging for community care and wellness.

Way-finding and 6ft social-distancing sidewalk markers. These were placed throughout the city along the sidewalks (especially near community centers and resource hubs) to remind people of wellness best-practices for themselves and their neighbors during such an uncertain time.
