Tulip Street Tunnel (2020-2021)
Port Richmond–Philadelphia, PA
A project through Mural Arts Philadelphia and Olde Richmond Civic Association (ORCA)
Overall Size: 14,224 Sq Feet
East Wall — 480 feet x 14 feet
West Wall — 536 feet x 14 feet
The design for the mural incorporates references to Old Richmond’s industrial past, its waterfront area and urban agriculture.
The mural shows human’s coexistence with nature and the history of the River Wards. With visual mentions of The Delaware River, the old port of industry, the urban sprawl and hustle, the community of people, plants and land––Port Richmond is such a unique space––I wanted to honor that diversity.
Living in an urban environment in any city (and previous Port Richmond resident), I see the forced, gradual coexistence of buildings and people and how plants and animals must adapt to those spaces. You walk through the city and see morning glories growing up a steel chain-linked fence, or there might be a pile of dirt that a dump truck left and there’s grass growing out of it. If you really take time to look, it’s everywhere, it’s inevitable, but it can be beautiful.
